The Woman King (2022)

 

The Woman King (2022) is a historical action-drama inspired by the true story of the Agojie, an all-female warrior unit that defended the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film stars Viola Davis as General Nanisca, who leads and trains the next generation of warriors to protect their kingdom from external threats.

 Set in 1823, the story follows Nanisca as she prepares the Agojie to confront the powerful Oyo Empire, which has been capturing Dahomey villagers and selling them to European slave traders. The film also introduces Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman who joins the Agojie after refusing an arranged marriage. Under Nanisca’s mentorship, Nawi undergoes rigorous training and becomes an integral part of the unit.

As the conflict with the Oyo intensifies, Nanisca urges King Ghezo (John Boyega) to end Dahomey’s participation in the slave trade and seek alternative means of economic prosperity, such as the production of palm oil. The film delves into themes of sisterhood, resilience, and the moral complexities of leadership during a tumultuous period in history.
